(последователи протест. направления, возникшего в ходе развития пуританизма в Англии в нач. 17 в. и направленного на очищение церкви от остатков католицизма и шире - на преобразование церкви и общества на основе Священного Писания; баптисты отвергают монашество, поклонение иконам; таинствами у них признаются только водное крещение и хлебопреломление; основным условием для членства в церкви считается сознательное признание Иисуса Христа в качестве личного Спасителя; Священное Писание является единственным авторитетом в делах жизни и веры; очень рано баптисты разделились на два течения: Общих и Частных; Общие баптисты считали, что Христос умер за всех людей и каждый уверовавший может спастись; Частные баптисты принимали кальвинистскую трактовку спасения; по их мнению, Христос умер лишь за избранных, которые могут уверовать и спастись; большинство баптистов в мире принадлежит к Частным; из-за постоянных преследований баптисты очень рано стали переселяться из Европы в Сев.
